The Details – Hawaii Wedding Photography

April 27th, 2011

We realize that a lot of people put in a lot of hard work to make your special day perfect.  The dress is worn just once, the flowers wilt with time, the cake is perishable and those favors take a lot of time to put together.  There’s only 1 last dance with the Father of the Bride & it’s usually a very special time.  You don’t want a photographer in your face ruining it, so we shoot with long lenses & capture the emotion of that special time.  We also spend a lot of time and effort to capture all of those seemingly small details of the reception.  Many times the reception images don’t make the website. Thanks to a prospective client we are realizing that (thanks Jill).  So here are just a few of many images from some of our receptions.

Boys Rush Soccer Pictures!

March 1st, 2011

We had the honor of shooting for Rush Soccer Pictures again today! This time for the boys.  Here’s a pretty traditional shot of Logan.  For you technical types, this was shot at around 5:30 pm. I put the boys perpendicular to the sun so that it would act as a kicker on the side of their face.  I lit the other side of their face with a Quantum X5d-r through a Norman 19″ Softbox.

Please Help, I’m going to Jail (for a good cause)!

February 25th, 2011

Here at Phillips Photography we have been asked to participate in the MDA Lock Up Program where community leaders voluntarily go to Jail and attempt to raise bail money to be donated to Jerry’s Kids. We feel that we have a responsibility to give back to the community so of course we said YES!!

Our goal is $2,000! We must meet this by March 9th! This will allow 2 kids to go to an MDA Camp on Oahu’s North Shore.  Please help by donating via our personal MDA website! You have to check out the little promo video at the top…it’s funny! Heres the site:

CLICK HERE TO SEE FUNNY PROMO VIDEO & DONATE!!

Every little bit helps. I’d like to be able to exceed that goal.  If everyone would give just a little then we’d far exceed it & get some much needed help for these kids!  Phillips Photography has already made a donation ourselves because we’d never ask you to do anything that we ourselves are not willing to do.  Thank you very much!!

My Gear

February 25th, 2011

Ok, so here’s a quick snapshot of my bag (from a point & shoot…notice the horrible on-camera flash lighting) with contents labeled.  This is not all of our gear, of course, but it’s about all we can take with us conveniently. Not seen is a Manfrotto Carbon Fiber tripod with magnesium head and light stands.

Jones’ Hawaii Beach Portraits

February 19th, 2011

We shot the Jones family beach portraits this afternoon/evening. It was cloudy which initially provided some really great natural light, but that light quickly faded so time to break out the Quantum X5dr.  The sky was still pretty dramatic so I chose to shoot from a low angle and use it.  This is the result.

Here is a pull back shot of my set-up to give you a rough idea. Obviously we were just getting the family into position for a different pose, but the lighting set-up was exactly the same. I hadn’t adjusted the exposure or anything so don’t be too critical of the shot itself, it’s just a shot to document my lighting setup.

Bring your studio outdoors!

February 18th, 2011

In my first real post, I posted about being proactive with light rather than reactive.  Here’s an example of an image where we were proactive with the light.  Obviously this image was taken later in the afternoon, at or just after sunset. The light wasn’t necessarily bad…but it wasn’t all that great either.  So I placed this couple in the shade of a tree & then added some flash with the help of a Quantum X5dr flash system (camera & flash both set to manual) with softbox attached. This system has a lot of power so you’re able to closely match the background which is what I was attempting to do (I actually wanted to darken the background just a little to draw more attention to the couple and glean more pleasant light quality from the softbox). I also wanted to add some nice catchlights in their eyes.  The result is a nicely lit image. Admittedly I did adjust the white balance in photoshop so that the flash would be a little warmer, I should’ve set a custom white balance on location, but that’s the beauty of shooting RAW. I personally like to get as good as possible in camera because I don’t like sitting behind the computer editing pictures….but in the digital world that’s just reality.
